Working Together to Improve the Riverfront

A Note from RNP Executive Director Stephanie Phillips:

This spring, you may notice people in neon vests working along the Port Richmond Trail and its connector streets, as well as the K+T Trail and its connector streets. RNP has launched a partnership with the City of Philadelphia to make it cleaner and greener – and to provide our most vulnerable residents with pathways to jobs.

You have let us know, through surveys and meetings, that your enjoyment of – and access to – the trail is affected by the litter you see. We are proud to start working towards a solution. This spring, we started a Same Day Work & Pay program, which offers low to no-barrier work opportunities for people experiencing economic insecurity. Eligible Philly residents join us to receive daily pay for three-hour shifts, helping to control litter and perform other light maintenance focused around the Port Richmond Trail on Delaware Avenue, and the K+T Trail with a focus on connector streets like Magee Avenue and Devereaux Avenue.

The Taking Care of Business program and the Center for Employment Opportunities are working with us to provide job training to people returning home from incarceration. They are focused on litter and illegal dumping on the Richmond Street business corridor and its connector streets to the Delaware River, from Allegheny Avenue to Orthodox Street.

Connecting people to the river is our mission. We do that not only by caring for our parks and trails but sharing a reason for you to come. Whether it is learning on the job, or through one of our free outdoor programs or volunteer days, we invite you to come see us this summer!

Warmly,

Stephanie Phillips
